COVID 19 Updates and Student Masks Coming Home

Hello Stars,

Thank you for your continued support in ensuring our school community remains safe. We appreciate your attention to completing the Covid-19 school screener each day. A reminder that this needs to be finalized at home and verified through the classroom teacher before your child arrives at school. We cannot have any students at school who have not completed the screener or are showing any symptoms of illness be at school.

As per our Director’s previous letter to school communities (January School Re-Opening Update to WCDSB Parents Jan 13th 22 ) , Public Health is no longer supporting case and contact management for schools. The board or school will not be notifying the class or school community when there is a suspected positive case in the school.

Therefore-if you or your child believe that you are dealing with a case of COVID, (because you have one or more symptoms), we ask the you/your child remain isolated until the positive case is both symptom free for 24 hours and it has been 5 days since symptom onset for vaccinated individuals and 10 days for unvaccinated individuals. Household contacts should also isolate for the duration of the isolation period. We will be monitoring school absenteeism rates and will work with Public Health if concerning thresholds are reached.

As we continue to work to provide a safe and healthy learning environment for our students, while also strictly adhering to public health guidance, we will from time to time experience some challenges, in ensuring an appropriate number of school staff are available.

This could result in a need to switch some in person classes to remote learning for short periods of time. Our hope is that we do not need to do so, yet if it is necessary, communication will be delivered through email. Checking and monitoring for school updates at this time is quite important.

Today or tomorrow, each student should be arriving home with 2 new masks. These are 3 ply masks that have been provided to us. They are for your child to keep and wash regularly. Please take a look in their backpacks for these.

Thank you again for your continued support. This is an amazing school community which is blessed with wonderful parent partners.

Stay Safe Stars!

WCDSB Newswire: Anticipated Transportation Service Interruptions: Important for Students Riding A Bus

SEB Stars that depend on bussing, please review the following information carefully that was posted by WCDSB on behalf of Transportation.

We want to share an important update. Bus operators are now experiencing an increase in driver absences due to COVID-19 isolation.

Although more than 90% of our routes are operating normally, some routes are experiencing more frequent and prolonged delays (50 minutes or greater). As a result, Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region (STSWR) will need to cancel some routes for a short period of time when driver absences cannot be covered.

This temporary measure will be effective Tuesday, January 25, 2022, until Friday, February 18, 2022.

STSWR will continue to evaluate this approach to reducing delays and adjust the approach in order to continue to reduce the impact on students, families, and caregivers.

We understand the significant impact this decision will have on our students and their families and caregivers. STSWR does this only as a last resort. We hope that proactively implementing and communicating this course of action will allow families and caregivers to better prepare for and react to the cancellation of bus routes.

What Happens If A School Bus Route is Cancelled?

Effective January 24, 2022, a school bus route will be cancelled if a driver is isolating due to COVID-19 and there are insufficient drivers to cover the isolating driver’s routes.

The duration of the cancellation period will be communicated immediately to affected students and families.

For Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) Students and Families

For students and families in the WCDSB, if a school bus route is cancelled due to a COVID-19 related driver absence, there are three options for families:

  • Where possible, families should find alternative transportation for their students for the 5 to 10 day bus transportation cancellation period.
  • If that is not possible:
    • Students may participate asynchronously remotely by accessing their class Virtual Learning Environment (D2L or Google Classroom) or
    • Students may access asynchronous lessons on TVO and STVLElementary;

Stay Informed

Families will be informed the day prior to any cancellation and cancellation will be posted on the STSWR website with an expected return date.

A Message from St. Michael Parish

Friday Jan 21: PD Day Reminder

Please remember tomorrow is a professional development day for staff. There will be no school for students.

Those previously registered for extended day may attend.

SEB Important Updates: Jan 18th

Hello Stars,

We hope everyone had a safe day yesterday and was able to enjoy the fun elements of the snow. Please see important SEB Star updates below.

PD Day Reminder: Friday January 21st

There will be no school for students this Friday as all staff will be participating in professional development activities. Extended day will be open for those who are registered.

Rapid Antigen Test Kits

These have been re-packaged so that each student receives 2 tests to use if and when your child is showing symptoms of COVID 19. They are coming home with your child today. As they are temperature sensitive, we ask that you remove them from your child’s backpack as soon as possible. A paper copy with directions should also come home. Please note there is no stand to hold the tube so you would need to hold it upright yourself.

Directions on how to administer test can be found here: Rapid Antigen Test Kit Directions Jan 2022

Screening Each Day Requirement:

It is more important than ever before, that anyone feeling ill should not attend school. All children, students, staff, and visitors must be screened for symptoms of illness every day before attending school or childcare.  Any student or staff member with any symptom should not report to school.  To help meet this requirement, you will need to use the provincial screening tool found below. Using the screening tool will lead you to the right process for family/household contacts as well.  Please use the screener and review your full outcome carefully.  Confirmation of self-screening is a requirement and we will continue to reinforce masking and hand hygiene, as well as co-horting and physical distancing with students and our staff.

Confirmation of your screening is to be completed through your child’s teacher. If staff cannot verify the screener has been completed, the students cannot physically be at school. Thank you for your cooperation with this.

When we experience wintry weather throughout the year schools follow School Board policy when deciding to keep students indoors during winter.  When schools are open, special consideration must be given to the safety and well-being of students while they are outside at recess, lunch, or for other outdoor activities.  The following temperatures (including windchill) and actions should be followed during winter months:
  • *NEW TEMPERATURE GUIDELINES: When the temperature is between -20°C and -27°C, schools will move to a shortened outdoor recess and lunch period.  This period will not be longer than 15 minutes.
  • When temperatures are colder than -27°C, students must remain inside.
Otherwise, all students will go outside for recesses and lunches. Students must dress for the weather and be prepared to be outside before school, during the two 15-minute recesses and the 40-minute lunch break.

Please check the weather each day before students leave for school to ensure they are coming to school dressed appropriately to go outside every day.

Temperatures and conditions vary across the Region. The following website shall be used to assess local conditions (using the school’s postal code):

All of our SEB Stars are asked to continue to bring a clean supply of masks to wear during our COVID times. Reminding your child to wear properly is helpful to our staff. We have been told that by the end of this week our schools should receive a supply of 3 ply mask for students. We will distribute these directly to students as soon as we can.

10 Day Remote Learning option in Waterloo Catholic Elementary Schools

Families have the option to pivot to remote learning for a period of two weeks beginning on January 17th and ending on January 28th. Parents may then choose to extend this option for another two weeks – January 31st – February 11th. It is very important that parents, if they haven’t already done so, contact the classroom teacher and call the office to indicate they are choosing this option.

Thank you, families, for your continued support in these challenging times.

Stay Well Stars!
