Progress Flag

Progress Pride Flag will fly at all WCDSB sites for the entire month of June.

Called to Belong Prayer

Creating God, out of your great love you created all things.

After the flood you crafted the rainbow and placed it in the sky as a reminder that you love everything and everyone you have created.

Yes, each individual colour of the rainbow is beautiful but its true beauty is found in the way that the colours are beautiful together. We are all called to belong, and we are most beautiful when we are together.

As human beings you crafted each of us in unique, distinctive and wonderful ways.

Some of us identify as 2SLGBTQIA+

No matter how you created us, we are all made in your image and likeness.

May all of your children come together and hold hands in peace and harmony. May we all work together for a world where acceptance, equity, justice, and celebration are possible for every person.

As the love of Jesus on the Cross extended to all people, by the power of your Holy Spirit may we love and embrace everyone in the same way.

Amen.

Fr. Joseph de Viveiros C.R.

June is the month traditionally devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus which, for Catholics, is a sign and symbol of God’s boundless and passionate love for all humanity. The month of June is also designated as PRIDE season in Waterloo region and across Ontario.

This month, and each and every month, our Catholic schools are committed to nurturing safe and inclusive learning environments where every student and every member of the community is welcomed, valued, and respected.

The Waterloo Catholic District School Board celebrates diversity within our school communities and welcomes and values all children. We honour the inherent dignity in all of our 2SLGBTAQIA+ staff, students, parents and family members by treating one another with sensitivity, compassion, and respect.

As Catholics, we believe that each of us is made in the image and likeness of God. We are called to see each other through God’s eyes – with sensitivity, compassion, and respect, and we see God in one another –wonderfully made, just as we are. As we live, learn, and work together, we encourage one another to celebrate the glorious discovery of how we are made and loved by a God who knows us intimately and who invites us into a deeper relationship with Himself.

Together, we will build a strong community that is committed to lifting up others, repairing harms of the past, and creating a better tomorrow for all. #Strengthen

Friday Flash…on a Thursday!

Good morning Stars,

Tomorrow is a Professional Development Day and therefore, no school for students. The Extended Day program will be open for those families registered in the program.  Enjoy your long weekend Stars!

SEB would like to thank our School Council for replenishing our recess equipment bins!  All classrooms received a variety of toys such as  skipping ropes, basketballs, scoops, footballs and soccer balls.  Our FDK classes are waiting patiently for large foam building blocks to arrive to their pen soon.  Thank you Council!

THIS IS WHY WE ARE HERE:

During the Month of June:

June’s OCGE focus is on being a Learner for Life.  Students will join together in a faith celebration at the end of June to wrap up our schoolwide theme this year.  How fitting that our last focus is on being a learner for life and we hope it doesn’t stop on the last day of school!  Keep learning and exploring through the summer!

By Being a A Self-Directed, Responsible, Lifelong Learner: I AM A LEARNER FOR LIFE!

  • I use my gifts and talents given to me by God
  • I always do my best
  • I build on my strengths and weaknesses
  • I set goals
  • I accept change
  • I am proud of the good things I do
  • I am thankful for the gifts of others

Because I am a learner for life, I can reach for my dreams, by living my life like Jesus.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in cultivating a dynamic and enriching educational experience for your child.

School News:

As a school, we have been reviewing many safety procedures through Monday Morning Prayer gatherings, assemblies, classroom visits and daily announcements.   In April and May we focused on:

Hallway Movement (including):

  • walking in the hallways
  • avoiding hitting, jumping, tapping signage
  • removing hoodies and putting phones/airpods away in backpacks
  • remaining quiet throughout the halls, especially during learning time
  • lining up, walking in orderly(ish) fashion
  • staying in own hallway (as opposed to across the school)

Using School Appropriate Language (including):

  • interacting with each other with the appropriate volume, tone, language and body language; this includes in the classroom, on the yard, on the school bus and at school events/ field trips
  • using please and thank you with one another; using each other’s names etc.
  • eliminating swearing at school (on the yard or on the bus)

In June we will focus on Cell Phone/Electronic Procedures (including):

  • reminding students about keeping phones in backpacks, unless under direct teacher supervision for specific projects, students should not be on their phones while at school
  • should a student need to bring a cell phone it should be turned off during the day and in their school bag (not their pocket) students will always have the option to use the school landline if they ever need to reach a parent/guardian
  • there are times when students may have permission to use their device for research for example, but a chromebook will always be offered as an alternative
  • in general, schools encourage cell phones, headphones & air/earpods to be kept at home; things can happen and we understand if students do not want to bring these things in case they are stolen, lost or wrecked
  • the school is not responsible for student’s personal belongings and/or the replacement of any item

There has been a positive uptake in students following these procedures and we know they are doing their best to earn SHINING STAR tickets for our weekly draw.  Keep up the great work STARS!

Friday Flash…a look ahead!

Good morning Stars,

Please send prayers to our grade 7 students who will celebrate their Confirmation on Saturday May 25th at St. Michael’s Church.  This is a significant milestone in their spiritual journey, and we are very proud of their dedication and commitment to their faith.  May this sacrament be a source of grace, joy, and strength for each of them as they embark on this next chapter of their spiritual journey. We would also like to express our deepest gratitude to our wonderful teachers who have prepared students, and to you, the caregivers for your unwavering support and encouragement throughout this journey. Your love, prayers, and involvement in your child’s religious formation have been instrumental in preparing them for this special day!

Thank you to our Co-Ed Soccer team coaches – Mlle Kim, Ms. Canto and Mr. Raos for wrapping up their tournament!  Many lunchtime practices brought us to the tournament this past Tuesday where the Stars played 3 games.  Great work Stars!

Thank you for all participation in our Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser and activities on May 17th. Thank you to Mrs. Coutts who managed to keep jumping despite the sun, clouds and rain! SEB raised over $3500 for Heart & Stroke!

Please watch your schoolcash online for yearbook purchases coming to you soon!  All details and information will be outlined in the schoolcash online!  A huge thank you to school council and Melanie A for taking this massive project on!

Friday Flash…a look ahead!

Good morning Stars,

Please welcome 5 students joining our school community on Tuesday from Colombia. These students will be joining Ms. Powis’ grade 5 class for 3 weeks and we hope all students through the school welcome and show the inclusive community we are part of at SEB!

Exciting news is coming to help families with calling attendance for children!  School Messenger Safe Arrivals will have sent you a message (phone, voicemail, email or text) on Thursday to let you know this system is coming to the WCDSB.  This will make attendance reporting so much easier for families.  More detailed information will be coming on Monday!

This year, we are once again following Ministry direction to administer the assessment from the Education Quality and Accountability Office for all Grade 3 and 6 students. Our grade 3 students will be writing during the week of Monday May 27th and our grade 6 students the following week beginning on June 3rd.  We anticipate technical challenges based on last year’s experience so we are hopeful the system is ready for us!  Please encourage your child to do their best and congratulate your child on their efforts. Families will receive individual results in the Fall and as a school staff we will examine patterns and trends for student achievement data.

Thank you to the parents and volunteers who came out to St. David’s for our Track & Field event yesterday! The weather was perfect and the student athletes in Grades 4-8 enjoyed the competition and the spirit of the day! Results to be announced soon!

School Registration:  Registration for 2024-25 school year If you have younger children who are not yet registered for next year, please begin this process immediately. If you know other families who are hoping to have their children attend SEB next year, they must register now. Our staffing is based on registrations at this point in time. School boards do not wait until the last week of summer to begin the staffing process. Thank you for spreading the word about online registration for 2024-25!

Moving?  Please contact the school as soon as possible as we are preparing classes for next year. Staffing is based on the number of students who are registered so we need an accurate number of students in each grade. Track and Field Tomorrow for SEB!

The warm weather has arrived and the students in Grades 4 to 8 are preparing and looking forward to participating in our School Track and Field Meet tomorrow May 16th at St. David Catholic Secondary School.

To ensure our success for the day, we have a few reminders for students and families to bring the following items:

  1. A nutritional lunch and snacks – please avoid sending any milk products (e.g., mayo as it may be sitting in the hot sun all day!)
  2. Plenty of water in non-breakable containers.
  3. Sunscreen is essential (kindly send tube/bottle sunscreen not aerosol).
  4. Blanket or towel to sit on or to cover up with.
  5. Track pants, sweatshirt, shorts, t-shirt, wind pants and jacket, and suitable running shoes. (No spikes).
  6. Hat for the sun – there is very little shade – students need to protect themselves from the sun. Sunglasses are recommended.
  7. Raincoat if the weather prescribes it.
  8. There is no concession booth for the students. There is no need to send any money with your child.
  9. Students are not permitted to leave the Track & Field meet at any time during the day or leave the designated area assigned to us.
  10. There are washrooms on site that are designated for our students only and a supervisor will assist students with washroom visits. This is where the first aid is located.
  11. In between their events, students will be sitting in an assigned area with their class. We suggest bringing materials like books, cards, a sketch pad, or small travel games to entertain themselves. They are also encouraged to watch the events near their location and cheer on their peers.
  12. NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES (cell phones, ipods, MP3 players, video games, etc.)
  13. Students will ride on the bus to track and back to the school.  Should a parent be on site to watch and would like to take their child home at the end of the meet – you must sign notify the classroom teacher and then sign them out with Mrs. Hunter at the washroom station.  This will allow you to take your own child(ren) home. We cannot release friends to ride home with another family without previous permission to the classroom teacher. Thank you for understanding.

We are also kindly reminding everyone that we are guests of St. David. We know that our Star students will show good sportsmanship, a positive mindset, and respectful behaviour. We are so excited for our annual Track and Field meet and look forward to a great day!

Lastly, huge thanks to our staff who have trained students for weeks, planned, prepared, ordered busing, packed materials, and given up countless hours to prepare for tomorrow.  Thank you to the many volunteers who have signed on and without whom we would not be able to run this amazing event!

In the grade 7 classes next week, on Wednesday May 15th, 2024, from 12:30 pm – 3:00 pm there will be a presentation on the topic of human trafficking and exploitation.

This presentation will complement our Fully Alive, Family Life Lessons as well as the Growing in Faith and Growing in Christ, Religious Education Program.  As with all our programming, we will present this topic with a careful eye to our Catholic outlook and understanding on human life and dignity.

Please see the flyer coming home today, as well as on D2L classes and attached here:  Grade 7&8 Human Trafficking Parent_Guardian Letter.docx (1)

Friday Flash…a look ahead!

Good morning Stars,

As you know, each year the Catholic community of Ontario engages in a week-long celebration of the distinct identity and significant contributions of Catholic education during Catholic Education Week. This year’s celebration is entitled, “Catholic Education: We are called to love” and will take place during the week of May 5 – May 10.

We will launch Catholic Education Week on May 5th with an invitation to attend mass with Father Jamroz at St. Michael’s Parish.

Catholic Education Week comes at the same time as Mental Health Awareness Week. Through love and compassion, we continue to support each other’s wellbeing. God is love and we are always called to live out this love.  In our continued work for Equity and Inclusion in Catholic schools, a focus on love reminds us that all God’s children are loved unconditionally.

Please see our daily themes and schedule here:  Catholic Education Week 2024

  • Monday, May 6th:          As people of hope
  • Tuesday, May 7th:          As people of faith
  • Wednesday, May 8th:    As people of mercy
  • Thursday, May 9th:        As people of justice
  • Friday, May 10th:            As people of joy

Please send prayers to our grade 2 students who will celebrate their First Communion on Sunday May 5th at St. Your love, prayers, and involvement in your child’s religious formation have been instrumental in preparing them for this special day.
